Original video files in VOB, MKV and M2TS — from 5.1 surround to full lossless Atmos
Dolby has been the dominant name in home theater audio since the early 1980s, and for good reason — the technology has evolved from a simple surround matrix to a fully object-based spatial audio system, all while maintaining backward compatibility across generations of hardware. What we’ve built here at Demolandia is a library of the original demo files that Dolby itself used to showcase each of these formats — the same files that were bundled with high-end receivers, played at trade shows, and distributed with early Blu-ray players.
They’re not recreations. They’re the original encodes, preserved in their native containers.
Why demo trailers matter for system testing
A synthetic test tone tells you whether a channel is active. A real demo trailer tells you whether your system sounds right. The difference matters more than most setup guides admit. Dolby Digital 5.1 demo trailers were engineered specifically to exercise the characteristics of each format — the low-frequency extension of a VOB file is different from what you’ll hear in a standard film mix, and that difference is intentional. These files push the format to its limits in a controlled way. After fifteen years of running this library, the download patterns are consistent: Channel Check is the first file most people grab — it’s the fastest way to confirm all six channels are active and correctly routed. Dolby Train Long demo follows, because it’s long enough to actually walk around the room and listen. Audiosphere leads the Atmos section with nearly 300,000 downloads, which tells you something about how many people are now running object-based setups.
SD files — Dolby Digital 5.1 and variants
The VOB files in pages 1 through 5 are DVD-era encodes. Most run at 720×480 NTSC or 720×576 PAL, which means your player needs to handle framerate conversion cleanly if you’re mixing them in a session. They’re the most compatible files in the library — any player that reads DVD will play them without issues.
Two things worth knowing before you download. First, Dolby Digital EX trailers Aurora and Egypt carry a matrixed rear center channel — if your receiver doesn’t recognize the EX flag it will play as standard 5.1 without warning. Second, Dolbee and Headphone are stereo 2.0 files — useful for testing front imaging, but don’t expect surround from them.
The Dolby Digital Rain trailer and Surround Sound are the most practical in the SD section for actual system verification — Rain for its directional surround content, Surround Sound for its channel sweep structure. Dolby Digital Orchestra demo is the longest SD file at 79 seconds and 64.5MB, and leads its page with over 28,000 downloads.
HD files — TrueHD 7.1 and Atmos
Pages 6 through 9 are where the library shifts to lossless. Every trailer here comes in two versions: a TrueHD 7.1 file in M2TS container and a full lossless Atmos file in MKV. The download numbers are clear about which format people prefer — the Atmos versions consistently pull two to four times more downloads than the TrueHD ones.
Dolby Amaze Atmos trailer leads the entire section with over 205,000 lossless downloads — if your receiver supports Atmos and you only download one file, this is the one. Dolby TrueHD Catalyst demo and the rest of page 7 cover TrueHD 7.1 without Atmos, including the Digital Plus 7.1 variant — a lossy format used mainly in streaming that sits between standard DD+ and full lossless.
The lossless signal needs to reach your receiver intact, which means HDMI bitstreaming from a player that supports passthrough — Kodi, MPC-HC, or similar. A smart TV decoding the file internally defeats the purpose entirely.
Dolby Channel Check TrueHD dominates page 8 with nearly 59,000 downloads — at 94 seconds it’s the most complete channel routing test in the library. Horizon at 327MB and Silent at 345MB are the largest files in the section. Both are worth the download — Horizon for its dynamic range, Silent for testing noise floor. If your system hisses audibly during a Dolby Atmos download like Audiosphere or Silent, something in your chain needs attention.
Atmos test tones
These are calibration files, not demo trailers. Four configurations: 5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.2 and 7.1.4. The number after the dot is the overhead speaker count. If you’re setting up an Atmos system for the first time, start with Dolby Atmos Test Tones 5.1.2 — it’s the most downloaded at 196,000 and the most common real-world configuration. The 7.1.4 file runs over twelve minutes, long enough to check every speaker position properly while moving around the room.4K Atmos files
The five 4K Dolby Atmos trailers are the same content as the HD section but at 3840×2160 and significantly higher bitrate. Core Universe leads with 120,000 lossless downloads — it’s also one of the smaller files at under 1GB. Escape is the demanding one at 1.68GB for twenty seconds of content. The bitrate is doing real work there, and on a display that can render the difference, it shows. The Dolby format continues to evolve, but the demo files in this library remain the most direct way to evaluate what your hardware is actually capable of — not what the spec sheet claims, but what it delivers under real program material at the bitrates these formats were designed for.
