THX demo trailers in VOB, M2TS and MKV — SD and HD with Dolby and DTS-HD MA audio
Few audio experiences are as immediately recognizable as the THX deep note. That sweeping rise from low-frequency chaos to a sustained chord is not an accident — it was composed by Dr. James “Andy” Moorer at Lucasfilm in 1983 specifically to demonstrate what a properly calibrated cinema sound system could do. Every trailer in this library ends with it, and every version of it was engineered to push the low-frequency response of the room to its limits. This section covers 53 files across SD VOB files from the original cinema era and HD M2TS and MKV files from the Blu-ray generation. Combined, they account for over 2,420,000 downloads, making THX the third most downloaded format section on the site after Dolby and DTS.
What THX actually is — and what the deep note represents
People often assume THX is an audio format sitting alongside Dolby Digital and DTS. It isn’t. George Lucas noticed in the early 1980s that cinema sound systems were not reproducing film mixes the way directors intended, so he brought in Tomlinson Holman to define what a properly performing cinema should sound like. The result was a set of acoustic and electronic requirements — not an encoding system. When a receiver or speaker carries the THX logo, it has been tested against those requirements. The soundtrack on the disc is still Dolby or DTS encoded; THX says nothing about how the audio was compressed, only about the hardware reproducing it.The certification splits into tiers based on room size and system complexity. THX Ultra2 covers large dedicated rooms running 7.1 setups. THX Select2 targets the average living room with a 5.1 system at normal viewing distances. THX Multimedia applies to desktop setups and near-field listening. Matching the right tier to your room and equipment matters more than the logo itself.
The trailers and what the download numbers show
THX Amazing Life leads the SD section with 109,100 downloads — the highest single-file count among all non-HD THX trailers. A Good Idea follows at 95,800. Both are DD 5.1 VOB files and both serve as straightforward channel separation and dynamic range tests rather than full cinematic productions.Jungle Sounds is the longest file in the SD section at 2 minutes 56 seconds — significantly more extended than the typical 30-60 second trailer format. Its DD EX 5.1 encoding and sustained ambient soundscape make it the most useful file on that page for rear channel and surround separation testing. THX Cimarron and THX Simpsons round out the mid-range downloads in the SD tier.
THX Tex and THX Tex 2 Moo Can together account for a significant share of the character-based trailer downloads. Tex is the CGI robot that became the most associated visual identity of the THX brand through the late 1990s and 2000s, appearing in multiple variations across those two pages. In the HD tier, THX Broadway Classic leads with 96,400 lossless downloads. Broadway is the trailer most directly associated with the THX deep note in its cleanest form — 33 seconds of TrueHD 5.1 built entirely around that signature sound. Terminator 2 THX HD lossless follows at 75,800 — the most technically demanding file in the HD section in terms of dynamic range. THX Eclipse Long HD in DTS-HD MA 7.1 rounds out the top three with 87,900 downloads.
THX deep note formats — VOB, M2TS and MKV across 9 pages
SD files are exclusively VOB, encoded in Dolby Digital 5.1 with a few DD EX 5.1 and DD 2.0 exceptions. HD files split between M2TS and MKV, with lossless tracks in either TrueHD 5.1 or DTS-HD MA — Broadway variants use TrueHD, Eclipse and most others use DTS-HD MA 5.1 or 7.1. Every HD file includes a DD 5.1 fallback alongside the lossless track.
